About Parent Revolution
Parent Revolution launched in January 2009 with a mission to change the focus of our public education system from one centered on adult interests to one that puts kids first. The success of our education system depends on every stakeholder coming together for the sake of our children’s success. But, far too often our current education system ignores the voice of a vital stakeholder – parents.
We aim to change this by empowering parents to transform their own children’s underperforming schools and using community organizing to advance a real kids first agenda. Parent Revolution supports parents by empowering them to transform their neighborhood school. With the help of our community organizers, parents develop leadership skills and organizing techniques that help them to identify and build relationships with other parents, community members, teachers, administrators, and the school board. Parents in California are backed by our first-in-the-nation Parent Trigger law, which gives parents at persistently low performing schools historic new power to transform their schools through community organizing.
Once enough parents are engaged, organized, and committed to collective action, the parents organize to form a “Parents Union Chapter.” A Parents Union Chapter is an independent, parent-led membership organization whose primary objective is to improve their neighborhood school. By coming together to build independent, local organizations, parents gain the strength they need to make changes in their school. Over the last four years, we have helped six different Parents Unions to transform their neighborhood schools using community organizing and California’s Parent Trigger law.
About our upcoming Parent Power Convention
On November 15, the veteran leaders of Parents Union Chapters are coming together, along with their allies around the country to inaugurate the first ever Parent Power Convention and declare that a new political constituency has arrived. Organized parent leaders will speak in one voice and outline a common set of principals and vision for the future of their efforts. They will celebrate their accomplishments and ongoing efforts at their individual schools, but make clear that those changes are not enough. They will not stop organizing until every single child in California and across the country has access to a great public education.
We would love to have a delegation of PALs join us at the upcoming Parent Power Convention in November! You can find out additional information about the event and register for it at our website here, or feel free to email Gabe Rose at email@example.com with any additional questions.
