The California education system of today really is a hot mess.
In fact, it is better than reality T.V. You see, there are over 100,000 different education codes with hundreds of new laws (ed codes) being discussed, approved, opposed, lobbied, or amended each legislative season and as you read this.
The first education code, Section 1-11 reads as follows: “1. This code shall be known as the Education Code.” Simple enough, right? Wrong. Here is one of my favorite lines from the same section: “8. Words giving a joint authority to three or more public officers or other persons are construed as giving such authority to a majority of them, unless it is otherwise expressed in the provisions of the code giving the authority.”
Are you scratching your head while trying not to yell, “WTH!” out loud in front of your kids?
See…a hot mess. Those are just a couple of examples. How are these codes supposed to ensure our kids have a high-quality education? Factor in the lobbyists, the teachers’ unions, and other special interest groups that have direct contact with most legislators through campaign donations and political power…oh and let’s not forget all the different school boards, which have their own set of policies. This includes the California State School Board, which actually has an active CTA lobbyist as board member. No. I’m not joking.
Let’s step away from the frustration of this mess for a moment and focus on the facts:
- California is ranked 46th in the nation in student achievement.
- The United States of America is ranked 24th in Reading, 28th in Science, and 36th in Math according to recent international testing of 15 year olds in the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA).
- Children in every zip code are failing more behind.
California is ranked near the bottom of a country that is ranked near the bottom in education.
Be afraid. Be very afraid. In fact, be so afraid that you want to do something to help.
Education is no longer a sideline sport.
It is real, and you must be ACTIVELY involved in your kids’ education. Let’s be clear…I’m not talking about simply grading papers, making copies, or bake sales. It’s bigger than that, and if you are not involved beyond the parent association fun themes, your child will be the one that misses out. You may not realize it until he/she does not get into the college of their choice or has to take remedial classes once there. Your child is competing with the rest of the WORLD for a spot in college.
If you can say, without a doubt, you are certain your child is getting a high quality education. Congratulations! However, most parents in California, regardless of the zip code, cannot say the same. We feel stuck, confused, and we want to step in and ensure our kids are the new priority in education.
This is where Parents Advocate League can help.
We work to inform you and teach you how easy it is to be engaged at a higher level, so the parent voice is heard. We clear the clutter and help parents be collectively active and empowered for the most important part of education: the students.
We need to continue our work, and we cannot do it without your support. Please join us. The more PALs we have throughout California, the stronger our voice is. Please consider a donation of any amount. The status quo seems to have endless dollars. We have our members, and rely on your generosity and that of others to continue Parents Advocate League.
Teachers have their unions. Students have their parents.
We are only as strong as our PALs.
Join us. Donate.
We need to continue our work together for the kids!
